After completing my second year in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph in 2016, I was on track to follow the traditional path to success laid out for me by my parents and school guidance counselor. However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I landed a job at a horseback trail riding outfit in Banff National Park instead of a summer engineering position.
Despite deviating from my planned career trajectory, working in Banff allowed me to fulfill my childhood dream of riding in the mountains. I guided guests through picturesque landscapes, drove horse-drawn wagons along the Bow River, and led expeditions to scenic meadows teeming with wildlife.
This experience taught me that a fulfilling life does not necessarily involve a desk job or corporate ladder climbing. It’s about cherishing simple moments like quiet mornings and finding joy in the beauty of our surroundings, even during challenging times like enduring long shifts in the rain.
Seasonal work introduced me to a diverse group of individuals, including career break takers, international travelers funding their journeys through temporary jobs, and full-time seasonal workers who balanced summer and winter employment. These friendships formed during intense work periods were profound and enduring compared to conventional social connections.
While farewells were inevitable as seasonal workers parted ways, the bonds forged during our shared experiences remained strong. These relationships reshaped my concept of success, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences and exploring diverse paths in life. Ultimately, my seasonal work adventures in Banff and Cranbrook, where I pursued my cowgirl dreams, prepared me for a career in international sales that allows me to continue exploring the world.
Although my departure from the engineering field initially puzzled my family, they came to understand and appreciate how seasonal work enriched my life and empowered me to pursue new opportunities. My time as a guide honed my problem-solving skills and self-reliance, instilling in me the confidence to embrace unconventional career paths.
While my past self may have been dismayed by my career shift, I now revel in the life I have crafted by following my aspirations. Embracing change and seeking new experiences have redefined my perspective on success, emphasizing the importance of exploration, adaptability, and enjoyment in shaping a fulfilling life.
