“Retired Couple Slashes Heating Costs to £40 Monthly”

-

A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating expenses to just £40 by participating in a new energy program trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have replaced their gas boiler with a data center housing over 500 computer banks in their shed. This innovative system generates heat that is channeled into their hot water system, significantly cutting down their heating costs from £375 to a range of £40 to £70 per month.

Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at the financial burden reduction, stating that they no longer worry about heating costs. The installation, known as the HeatHub data center, is a product of Thermify and is part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project aimed at aiding low-income households in transitioning to net zero emissions.

Praising the program, Mr. Bridges highlighted the efficiency of the system, which now keeps their entire bungalow consistently warm without cold spots. The couple’s positive experience has led to the installation of solar panels on their roof, further enhancing their energy efficiency.

The CEO of Thermify, Travis Theune, emphasized the dual focus of providing clean and affordable energy through their innovative solution, aiming to combat fuel poverty in the UK. Daniel Greenwood, from Eastlight Community Homes, commended the partnership’s efforts in implementing sustainable heating solutions and reducing carbon emissions.

The success of the trial in the Bridges’ home has paved the way for the expansion of the initiative to more households, with plans to reach 50 additional homes in the upcoming phase. With a goal to scale up to 100,000 units annually by 2030, UK Power Networks is committed to ensuring that all households, especially vulnerable and low-income ones, benefit from eco-friendly technologies as the UK strives for a greener future.
