“Pro-Palestine Protesters Close Roads, Lock Themselves to Van in UK”

-

Police have closed off multiple roads as Pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered at a drone manufacturing facility and allegedly secured themselves to the top of a van.

Authorities in Leicestershire responded to a call just before 5.15 am today regarding the situation at UAV Tactical Systems in Braunstone Town. Law enforcement found that a van had reportedly crashed into bollards outside the factory, with individuals purportedly fastened to the top of the van and others to a fence.

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested by police on suspicion of being prepared for locking on, a practice where individuals secure themselves to structures. She remains in police custody as officers continue to manage the ongoing incident.

Due to the demonstration, access to the business park vicinity has been restricted to the public, with Meridian East to Centurion Way closed off. Traffic in the area around Meridian East and Blue Bell Wood is also impacted, prompting drivers to seek alternative routes.

A local resident observed smoke emanating from the site shortly after 7 am, with the cause of the smoke yet to be determined. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service personnel have been seen at the location.

People Against Genocide, an activist group supporting Palestine, has claimed responsibility for the morning’s protests.

In a statement, the group alleged that UAV Tactical Systems’ main shareholder, Elbit Systems, is a major arms manufacturer in Israel. However, a spokesperson for UAV Tactical Systems (U-TacS) refuted these claims, stating that U-TacS does not supply the Israeli military or Ministry of Defence.

A statement released by Leicestershire Police detailed the events, confirming the deliberate collision of a van with bollards and the presence of individuals locking themselves onto structures.

The police statement reiterated their support for peaceful protests but emphasized swift action against those engaging in criminal activities or property damage.

The UAV factory has been a target for protesters in recent years, with past demonstrations organized by various activist groups. In a previous incident, a funeral-style procession was arranged by the Leicester Palestine Solidarity Campaign as factory workers concluded their shift.
