“Royal Cancer Urgings Strain NHS”

-

Calls made by King Charles and the Princess of Wales urging individuals with cancer concerns to seek medical assistance have caused a crisis within the NHS, according to a statement from a coroner.

Senior coroner Samantha Goward highlighted the challenges faced by the NHS due to a surge in new cancer diagnoses linked to public figures, including prominent celebrities like the royal family members.

In a published report, Goward mentioned significant delays in patient waiting times attributed to the increase in cancer diagnoses following public announcements by celebrities. She emphasized the positive impact of celebrities encouraging people to undergo medical check-ups but noted the added pressure on the NHS.

The concern was raised by Coroner Goward during the investigation into the death of Michael Moore, an 83-year-old resident of East Harling who passed away from bladder cancer after experiencing delays in his diagnosis and treatment.

While Goward couldn’t confirm whether earlier diagnosis and treatment would have altered Mr. Moore’s outcome, she expressed worries about potential delays for other patients in similar situations.

According to Goward, efforts were made by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust to reduce delays in recent years. However, an increase in referrals, partly due to high-profile celebrities announcing their cancer battles and encouraging the public to seek medical help, resulted in ongoing delays impacting patients’ diagnosis, surveillance, and treatment.

Several notable figures, including King Charles and the Princess of Wales, have shared their cancer treatment journeys in recent times, leading to a predicted surge in referrals following the King’s announcement of his diagnosis.

Goward’s report has been forwarded to NHS England officials for review, with a deadline set for their response by November 6.
