Eleven individuals have lost their lives, with ten more in critical condition, following the consumption of homemade alcohol in Colombia.
The issue came to light when authorities in Barranquilla responded to an emergency call concerning an unconscious man on the street. Medical responders confirmed the man, aged 47, had passed away.
Agustin Guerrero, a leading toxicologist overseeing the medical response, stated that one individual failed to respond to resuscitation efforts and died upon arrival at the hospital. The patients brought in were in dire condition, requiring immediate intensive care.
The toxicologist highlighted the challenges in early detection of methanol poisoning, noting its potential for sudden onset or delayed symptoms post-ingestion.
In Barranquilla, homeless individuals are known to consume a cheap concoction called “cochoco”, comprising ethyl alcohol, methanol, and other substances. This mixture, sold in plastic bottles for a nominal sum, has resulted in tragic outcomes previously in the region.
Colombia faced a similar health crisis in 2022 when 37 individuals in Bogotá succumbed to methanol poisoning.
Methanol poisoning poses severe risks, with potential symptoms including vision impairment, central nervous system damage, and fatality. The tasteless and odorless nature of methanol complicates early detection, with symptoms ranging from mild confusion to severe headaches, seizures, and coma.
The prevalence of methanol poisoning was highlighted in Laos in 2022, where six individuals, including Australian, British, Danish, and American citizens, lost their lives at a local bar.
Travel advisories, such as the UK government’s Travel Aware campaign, caution tourists about the risks of methanol poisoning in popular destinations. Immediate medical attention is recommended if poisoning is suspected.
