“UK Introduces ‘BritCards’ for Digital ID Verification”

-

Keir Starmer is preparing to introduce digital identification cards, nicknamed “BritCards,” for adults in the UK as part of efforts to combat illegal immigration. The Prime Minister is anticipated to announce this initiative in a forthcoming speech, enabling the verification of individuals’ rights to reside and work in the country.

Under the proposed system, every adult would be required to possess a digital ID, which can be stored in a GOV.UK smartphone application, for job applications or rental agreements in the UK. These IDs would be cross-referenced with a central database of individuals authorized to live and work in the UK, aiming to streamline the process of verifying immigration status and deter illegal employment practices, such as within delivery services, and address issues related to unscrupulous landlords.

Although the Government had previously dismissed the idea, a recent report by the think-tank Labour Together prompted a reconsideration. According to Labour Together, the ID cards would be distributed at no cost to all eligible individuals, with estimated setup expenses ranging from £140 million to £400 million.

Aside from their primary purpose, the proposed ID cards could offer additional conveniences to consumers, such as eliminating the need to carry a passport for parcel pickups at the Post Office and potentially serving as a valid form of identification for purchasing alcohol.

Keir Starmer is slated to discuss this initiative at the Global Progress Action Summit in London, where he will be joined by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Prime Minister has recently acknowledged the potential role of an ID card system in curbing illegal migration, emphasizing the evolution of digital identity management since the debates of the 2000s.

He highlighted the increasing prevalence of digital IDs in modern society, suggesting a shift in societal attitudes towards their use compared to two decades ago.
