In a meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump suggested that NATO should take action against Russian planes entering allied airspace. The discussion took place during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York City. When asked about supporting the shooting down of Russian aircraft, Trump responded that it would depend on the circumstances.
Trump praised Zelensky, referring to him as a “great man” who is bravely fighting for Ukraine. He commended the Ukrainian efforts, noting the ongoing conflict lasting over three and a half years.
Contrary to his previous interactions with Zelensky, Trump’s recent tone was notably more positive. Estonia reported a recent airspace violation by Russian jets, prompting NATO to emphasize its readiness to defend its territory using all necessary military means.
NATO Chief Mark Rutte affirmed the alliance’s stance against Russian aggression, stating their willingness to take action if needed. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed similar sentiments, expressing readiness to shoot down any trespassing Russian aircraft over Polish territory.
Following the interception of Russian drones by Poland, Trump reacted on social media, questioning Russia’s actions. At the UN General Assembly, Trump highlighted the threat posed by nuclear weapons, particularly singling out Iran as a sponsor of terrorism that should not possess such arms.
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied any intention to develop nuclear weapons, emphasizing Iran’s stance on uranium enrichment and resistance to external pressure.
