“A&E Doctor Challenges Farage’s ILR Proposal”

-

An A&E doctor from abroad, with a decade of experience in the UK, expressed strong disapproval of Nigel Farage’s proposal to eliminate indefinite leave to remain (ILR). Dr. Jinnie Shin, originally from Boston, USA, shared her concerns about the potential impact on her status in the country where she has resided for the last five years. Transitioning from a career in biomedical science to medicine, she joined the renowned NHS in 2015.

Having become a qualified doctor in 2019 and actively working in the NHS during the pandemic, Jinnie currently holds a Tier 2 skilled worker visa and aims to apply for ILR within the next year. However, Farage’s recent announcement, outlining plans to abolish ILR if Reform UK gains power, has sparked worries among many including Jinnie. This move could jeopardize the paths to citizenship for numerous legally settled migrants in the UK, including essential NHS and care workers.

Residing in East Hertfordshire with her European partner, Jinnie conveyed feeling unwelcome due to Reform UK’s proposal, which she believes undermines the invaluable contributions of international medical professionals to the NHS. Highlighting the significant presence of non-UK national doctors in the NHS, she emphasized that stripping ILR from these individuals could exacerbate the existing workforce shortages in the healthcare sector, potentially leading to a collapse of the NHS.

Jinnie also stressed that her training in the NHS translates to a loss for British taxpayers if she is compelled to depart. Expressing hope that the idea of revoking ILR from individuals like her is too far-fetched to materialize, she remains cautiously optimistic about the future. In response, a spokesperson for Reform UK clarified that individuals with existing ILR status would be eligible to apply for renewable five-year visas under their proposed policies. Additionally, they mentioned the introduction of Acute Skills Shortage Visas (ASSV) for critical roles like those in the NHS facing acute staff shortages.
