UK Telecoms Unite to Stop Scammers spoofing Calls

-

Mobile operators like BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking steps to prevent foreign call centers from posing as banks in a bid to combat scams. These companies have committed to enhancing their networks to prevent scammers from spoofing UK numbers within the next year.

Number spoofing, a tactic used by scammers to mask their identities by altering their caller ID, will be curbed through this initiative, ensuring that calls originating from abroad are easily identifiable. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to detect and block suspicious calls and texts, while advanced call tracing technology will be provided to law enforcement to aid in tracking down scammers nationwide.

Leading telecom providers such as BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK) have all joined forces to combat fraudulent activities.

Recent data reveals that 96% of mobile users determine whether to answer a call based on the displayed number, with a significant portion unwilling to pick up calls from unknown international numbers. Lord Hanson, the Fraud Minister, emphasized the importance of addressing spoofed calls, as they enable scammers to deceive individuals with false identities and promises.

Lord Hanson expressed the government’s commitment to cracking down on fraud by eliminating call spoofing within a year, thus depriving scammers of the tools they use to defraud people. This initiative aims to bolster defenses, safeguard victims, and make the UK a hostile environment for scammers.

Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040 or through the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland at 0808 164 6000 or via their website. Additionally, scam emails should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, and suspicious text messages to 7726, both free of charge. Dodgy websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.

If suspicions arise about a potential scam call, it is advised to disconnect immediately and search online for the contact details of the supposed caller. Refrain from calling back the provided number and contact your bank promptly if unauthorized account access is suspected. It is crucial to change any leaked or compromised passwords without delay.
