Cabinet minister Pat McFadden criticized Donald Trump’s assertion that London desires sharia law as a misunderstanding of the city’s essence. The dispute escalated following the US President’s critique of London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, labeling him as “terrible.” During a speech at the UN General Assembly, Trump expressed discontent with London’s transformation and suggested a shift towards sharia law.
In response, McFadden emphasized the presence of British law, not sharia law, in London, highlighting the city’s significance as a key asset to the United Kingdom. He praised London’s economic prowess, creativity, and cultural diversity, affirming its importance to the nation.
A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump’s remarks as bigoted and refused to engage with them, asserting London’s status as a leading global city and a safe haven for diverse communities. Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended Khan’s inclusive leadership, emphasizing his support for equality, environmental initiatives, and public safety.
Labour MPs, including Dame Emily Thornberry, Rupa Huq, and Rosena Allin-Khan, stood in solidarity with Sadiq Khan, denouncing Trump’s accusations as false and calling for diplomatic action against such Islamophobic rhetoric. They praised Khan’s progressive policies and celebrated London’s multicultural identity.
