A young cricketer, aged 17, has tragically passed away in Australia after being struck in the neck by a ball while practicing. Ben Austin was training at Ferntree Gully Cricket Club in Melbourne when the fatal incident occurred.
Austin, who was wearing a helmet while batting in the nets, was immediately attended to by emergency services and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts, he did not survive.
The teenager was placed on life support but succumbed on Thursday. The Ferntree Gully Cricket Club confirmed the heartbreaking news through a social media statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Ben.
Ben’s father, Jace, also shared a message on behalf of the family, describing Ben as a beloved son, brother, and a bright presence in their lives. Jace extended sympathy to the bowler involved in the accident as well.
The family of Phillip Hughes, an Australian Test star who passed away in a similar incident in 2014, also sent their condolences to the Austin family and the cricket community. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen and Cricket Victoria chief executive Nick Cummins expressed their grief and condolences for the tragic loss.
