Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad living in Toronto, discovered an international whistling contest while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued, he signed himself and his daughter, Sumire, up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a fun activity. Initially, Shannon saw it as a casual event, viewing the world with ironic humor. However, when the contest turned out to be a serious competition in Los Angeles, he realized the need for dedicated practice.
Both Shannon and Sumire, skilled whistlers, received the opportunity to audition after submitting tapes. To enhance their performance, they enlisted the help of Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, for coaching. Kaufman’s feedback highlighted the need for more professional whistling skills to impress the competition judges.

Finally, taking the stage, Sumire secured a silver medal in the kid’s category, while Shannon clinched the gold in the level one adults category, marking a significant achievement for both.
