“Siblings’ Journey: Toronto Woman Navigates Care for Autistic Brother”

-

Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, recently faced a significant life change after losing her mother and taking on the role of her older brother Stuart’s primary caregiver. Stuart, who is neurodivergent and autistic, also survived a left-brain stem stroke, leading to specific care needs such as assistance with daily activities like eating, transfers, grooming, and emotional support due to mood fluctuations and sensitivity to loud noises.

Growing up, Simone experienced challenges as she struggled with understanding and accepting Stuart’s differences, often feeling embarrassed by his behaviors, which were misunderstood by others. Despite these challenges, Simone acknowledges the similarities between herself and Stuart, particularly in managing their respective neurodivergent traits. She learned to mask her ADHD tendencies, adapting to social norms to avoid triggering Stuart’s sensitivities.

Over the years, Simone has worked on improving their living situation, making efforts to accommodate Stuart’s needs while navigating her own struggles. Despite sacrificing personal pursuits like acting classes to provide consistent care for Stuart, she finds fulfillment in their evolving relationship. By fostering open communication, respecting Stuart’s autonomy, and seeking external support when needed, Simone aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for both siblings.

Through this experience, Simone reflects on missed opportunities from their past and embraces the chance to strengthen their bond in adulthood. Despite past regrets, she remains committed to being a supportive sibling and caregiver, determined not to let this second chance slip away.
