Artificial intelligence has ventured into the realm of television with its own dedicated channel on the popular streaming platform, the Roku Channel. The addition of Fairground AI Creator TV, which features 24/7 fully AI-generated content for free, was not officially announced by Roku but was reported by Cord Cutters News.
However, the debut of this AI channel has sparked some online criticism, with some viewers expressing discontent with the concept. Frank Landymore of Futurism described it as an “unending conveyor belt of AI slop,” while Bradly Shankar of MobileSyrup also voiced critical opinions.
Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, offering free, ad-supported streaming television. While there are approximately 200 FAST channels available on the Roku Channel in Canada, Fairground AI is not yet among them. The company has not disclosed any plans to introduce the channel in Canada.
Roku, a leading streaming service globally, was acquired by Fox in a $22 billion deal in June, granting access to over 100 million households worldwide. The emergence of AI-generated content is a growing trend, with various industries exploring AI applications. Fairground AI aims to expand its presence across five TV and FAST platforms, with its CEO Colin Petrie-Norris expressing optimism about the future potential of AI creators.
The move by Roku to introduce an AI channel aligns with the evolving landscape of streaming services, as highlighted by Fenwick McKelvey, an expert in information and communication technology policy. While the adoption of AI content raises questions about its reception among viewers, the industry continues to navigate issues related to creative control, copyright regulations, and privacy concerns.
The debate surrounding AI-generated content extends to broader implications for the entertainment industry, with ongoing discussions on compensating artists and safeguarding cultural integrity. As technology advances, the balance between economic interests and societal impact remains a critical consideration.
