“Aristocrat sentenced to 14 years for child’s death”

-

An aristocrat named Constance Marten has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the death of her fifth child. Marten, along with her partner Mark Gordon, took the baby, Victoria, into hiding due to fear that she would be taken into care. Victoria ultimately lost her life while living with the couple in a tent on the South Downs.

Despite her conviction for gross negligence manslaughter in Victoria’s death, Marten was allowed to organize the baby’s funeral with the assistance of the prison chaplaincy service. Marten, currently incarcerated at HMP Bronzefield alongside other individuals convicted of child-related offenses, expressed disappointment to fellow inmates for not being permitted to attend the funeral in person.

The grim discovery of Victoria’s body, concealed in a discarded bag under various items, including a can and sandwich packet, shed light on the tragic events that unfolded during her short life. Marten and Gordon’s erratic movements across different locations, evading authorities, came to an end when they were apprehended in Brighton.

During the legal proceedings, it was disclosed that Gordon had a history of violent offenses in the United States before being deported back to the UK. The court also heard details of Marten’s troubled family dynamics and her statements regarding the circumstances leading to Victoria’s demise.

Ultimately, Marten and Gordon were handed a 14-year prison sentence each for their roles in Victoria’s death, with additional years for related charges. The judge reprimanded the defendants for their lack of remorse and highlighted the severe neglect that led to the tragic outcome.
