The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have reported the arrest of a minor in Montreal in connection with terrorism allegations. According to a recent press release, the RCMP indicated that the individual, identified as a “young man,” was allegedly planning an attack targeting a school in the city. The suspect is accused of utilizing artificial intelligence in the potential planning of the attack and posting threatening messages on Telegram directed at various groups, including Muslims, Haitians, and the 2SLGBTQ+ communities, as stated by RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Érique Gasse.
Sgt. Gasse mentioned that the FBI provided tips a few weeks ago regarding the individual’s attack plans. The arrest took place at the suspect’s residence on Friday morning as part of an investigation conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, which focuses on tracking and disrupting criminal activities of terrorist groups or individuals posing a threat to Canada’s national security.
The ongoing investigation involves the suspect meeting with investigators while other officials search his residence for electronic devices or relevant materials related to the case. The RCMP’s news release highlights that the police operation aimed to disrupt the individual’s suspected activities and to obtain a peace bond to facilitate monitoring and de-escalation interventions.
Sgt. Gasse confirmed that the suspect is scheduled to appear in youth court on Saturday morning, with the possibility of facing charges at a later date.
