“PM Carney Halts Talks with U.S. Over Unreasonable Demands”

-

Prime Minister Mark Carney instructed his negotiators to quit talks following the Trump administration’s introduction of unreasonable demands on culture, autos, and sovereignty. Carney expressed disappointment, stating that the U.S. was not genuinely seeking an economic partnership with Canada. He emphasized that the U.S.’s requests were excessive, while their offerings were insufficient.

Carney disclosed that the U.S. raised concerns about Canada’s support for French culture, French-language media online, and bilingual labeling on Canadian products. He reiterated that these demands were unacceptable to Canada from the outset and would not have been well-received by Canadians.

Regarding the automotive sector, Carney highlighted the U.S.’s unfair treatment of Canadian-made parts and their ambiguous exemption of certain vehicles from tariffs. These late demands, if accepted, would have negatively impacted Canada’s vehicle production in the long term.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford supported Carney’s decision to walk away from negotiations, assuring that Canada is united and ready for any trade dispute with the U.S. Ford criticized the proposed deal as detrimental to Ontario’s economy and industries.

Carney criticized the U.S. for attempting to undermine Canada’s sovereignty by restricting its ability to engage in other trade agreements. He stressed that such measures were unacceptable as Canada promotes free trade globally.

In response to the breakdown of talks, Carney underscored the importance of standing firm against unjust trade practices. He acknowledged the potential job losses and economic impact of the imposed tariffs while promising support for affected businesses.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed disappointment over the U.S.’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, emphasizing the need to protect Canadian industries. He pledged to continue advocating for tariff-free trade and collaborate with Carney to safeguard Canadian workers and businesses.

Economist Trevor Tombe warned that the tariffs could lead to significant job losses in Canada, particularly impacting provinces like Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. The federal government estimated that the tariffs would affect billions of dollars in Canadian goods and put thousands of jobs at risk.

Carney reassured the public that the government would take necessary actions to assist businesses affected by the tariffs and pledged ongoing support beyond the current administration.
