“Suncor Energy Divests Newfoundland Oilfields for $1.2B+”

-

Calgary-headquartered Suncor Energy has revealed a major change in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil sector by announcing the divestment of interests in three oilfields. In an announcement on Sunday, the company stated that it had agreed with U.K.-based Ithaca Energy to sell its ownership stakes in Terra Nova, White Rose, and West White Rose assets. The transaction includes an upfront cash payment of $1.2 billion along with a potential additional payment of up to $350 million linked to future oil prices. Suncor’s CEO, Rich Kruger, emphasized that the move is aimed at enhancing long-term shareholder value by focusing on strategic opportunities aligned with the company’s strengths in oil sands resources. Ithaca will take over the investment commitments and liabilities associated with the assets, including a regulatory compliance program and abandonment costs. The deal is set to be finalized early next year, pending regulatory approvals and partner consents. Suncor will retain its interests in Hebron and Hibernia oilfields in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ithaca, in its own statement, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, labeling it as a pivotal step in its growth strategy. The company’s executive chairman, Yaniv Friedman, highlighted the importance of diversifying and expanding production as part of their international expansion plans. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Energy and Mines Minister, Lloyd Parrott, welcomed the news, noting that Suncor’s focus on their core operations in the oilsands was anticipated. He praised Ithaca’s expertise and global presence, emphasizing the positive signal it sends to the province’s oil and gas sector. Parrott assured that the acquisition is likely to prolong the life of the oilfields and create job opportunities, aligning with Ithaca’s commitment to the region.

Jim Keating, CEO of OilCo, echoed the optimism surrounding the deal, viewing it as a significant endorsement of the province’s offshore potential. He highlighted Ithaca’s experience in late-life field development, indicating a strategic fit with the Terra Nova and White Rose assets. Keating emphasized the value of new entrants bringing fresh perspectives and innovation to the industry, signaling a positive outlook for Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil sector. Additionally, with a global trend of reinvestment in legacy projects, Keating sees Ithaca’s arrival as a catalyst for further growth opportunities in the region.

Fred Hutton, the Liberal energy critic, acknowledged the commonality of companies divesting stakes but expressed surprise at the announcement. He underscored the importance of safeguarding jobs and vowed to address any employment concerns with Suncor and in the legislative assembly. Hutton recognized Ithaca’s emergence as a key player and a potential boost for the local oil industry, highlighting the significance of attracting new investment to the province. The deal signifies a positive development and a vote of confidence in Newfoundland and Labrador’s energy sector, setting the stage for continued growth and collaboration.
